Food Impacting Hormonal Imbalance

How does the SAD (Standard American Diet) affect our hormones? The SAD is mostly comprised of processed and inflammatory foods resulting inflammation in our intestines and is the primary cause of hormonal imbalance.

We normally have tight junctions in our intestines that don’t let things pass through that shouldn’t. So when we have inflammation in our intestines, large particles such as bacteria, yeast, chemicals and toxins pass through and into our blood stream. Because 80% of our immune system is in our intestines, this activates our immune system and can cause some problems.

Inflammation in our intestines also leads to insulin resistance and decreased absorption of vital nutrients.

What are those processed and inflammatory foods?

Gluten

Dairy

Refined carbs

Processed and added sugars

Unhealthy fats

Packaged foods

Even meat can cause inflammation

I recommend my clients go on an elimination diet by removing these inflammatory foods for at least 30 days and reintroduce one at a time to see how their body reacts. Our bodies react in different ways so if your acne comes back, period cramps, bloating, or irritability, that means it is probably hormonal imbalance caused by food.

I recommend seeing a Functional medicine practitioner to help you determine the cause of your imbalance and food sensitivities or intolerances, so you can start your journey to healing your body. If you’ve already been on this journey, I’d love to hear what foods have you taken away or added that improved your hormonal imbalance. I hope you find this educational, inspiring, and empowering.
