FACT or MYTH: Soy Causes Breast Cancer

FACT or MYTH: Soy Causes Breast Cancer

Soy has been given a bad rep. Many women are told that eating soy could cause breast cancer. Men are told that it could cause increase in breast tissue growth called gynecomastia or decrease testosterone. Is soy really that bad?

The problem with soy is when it is not organic and genetically modified (GMO). Inorganic soy has been found to contain glyphosate which is the chemical found in Round Up (and other pesticides) and has been discovered as a known carcinogen. Soy can also be processed into textured soy protein or soy isolate which is found in many processed foods. This form of soy can cause inflammation in the body and can disrupt our hormones.

There are many studies that have shown that soy can actually reduce the risk of breast cancer. Soy contains antioxidants called isoflavones that bind to Estrogen beta receptors in breast tissue which actually suppress tumor growth. Other studies have shown that women who previously had breast cancer, reduced reoccurrence by eating soy. Remember, it’s the quality of soy that makes a difference so make sure it is organic and nonGMO.

Please share this with your family and friends. Let’s rethink breast cancer and empower others to do the same.
