Benefits of Elderberry

Did you know that elderberry can help fight and protect against the flu?

It boosts the immune system and has antiviral, anti inflammatory, and antioxidants properties. A study showed when taking 15 mL four times daily x5 days, it shortened the duration of the flu by 4 days. Sounds like a better alternative than Tamiflu which can cause side effects such as headache, nausea, vomiting, and hallucinations. 

Thankfully, I found this gem made locally without added thickeners, processed ingredients, and naturally sweetened with raw honey. I normally take 1 tbsp daily during flu season but if I get a cold or flu, then increase to 1 tbsp every 3-4 hours. Homemade is best to avoid any added process ingredients and sugar. If you can’t find local homemade elderberry syrup, you can either make it at home or buy Gaia Herbs elderberry syrup (which is 1 tsp daily). 

Whether someone takes Tamiflu or not to treat the flu, it’s their choice but know risk vs benefits and discuss with your provider. I just want to share a natural remedy that can help fight the flu and other viral infections. Most importantly, boosting the immune system is key to prevention and fighting infections!
