Have you gained weight for no apparent reason and have struggled to get back when you felt your best? It is possible that estrogen dominance may be the cause of your inexplicable weight gain.

What is Estrogen Dominance?

Estrogen dominance is a hormone imbalance. This is when there could be more estrogen than progesterone in the body. This causes a whole slew of symptoms, one of the more bothersome symptoms being persistent and stubborn weight gain.

3 Ways Estrogen Dominance Causes Weight Gain

Estrogen dominance can also cause the thyroid gland to be imbalanced. Excess estrogen causes a protein called Thyroid Binding Globulin to bind up thyroid hormones, such as T4 and T3. Low thyroid hormones cause hypothyroidism. When the thyroid is underactive, weight gain occurs.

Progesterone is a natural diuretic, so when progesterone levels are low, you could be retaining more water. Low levels of progesterone to estrogen can cause two types of Estrogen Dominance. Read more about Estrogen Dominance patterns here.

Excess estrogen can cause higher levels of glucose. When glucose isn’t controlled, over time you could develop insulin resistance. This then causes glucose to get stored in fat cells, so the body has to produce more fat, to store the excess glucose.
