When you are sick, should you go to the gym and sweat it out?

Regular exercise at moderate intensity 3-4 times a week is great for boosting the immune system to prevent infections such as the common cold. The common cold is a viral infection which is contagious the first 5 days and can last up to 7-10 days. Therefore, it’s best to stay away from the gym at the beginning of a cold to prevent passing it on to someone else and worsening of your symptoms.

Yes, sweating is a great way for our body to get rid of toxins but most people tend to over exert themselves when exercising. During intense exercise, the body releases cortisol which actually suppresses the immune system.

For those who want to keep moving their bodies, may benefit from light aerobic activity the first 5 days such as leisure walk or bike ride outdoors, and even yoga. Studies have shown light activity may help boost the immune system when you are sick. When in doubt, just walk it out! However, if have fever, colored mucus, and body aches, it’s best to just rest.
