Did you know that iodine is not only important for the thyroid but for the ovaries as well?

Iodine is known for thyroid health because is important for the production of thyroid hormones T4 and T3. T4 is converted to T3 which is the metabolically active thyroid hormone. This conversion occurs primarily in the thyroid but also in the liver, kidneys, heart, and muscle.

The organ with the second highest levels of iodine are the ovaries because it actually helps promote ovulation. In fact, studies have shown that iodine deficiency can cause infertility, ovarian cysts, and scarring of the ovaries. Iodine also promotes detoxification of estrogen so it prevents elevated levels of estrogen. It is helpful in the treatment of PCOS and estrogen dominant conditions such as endometriosis, PMS, and breast pain.


For those consuming a plant based lifestyle, seaweed such as kelp, dulse, and nori, are the best sources of iodine. The daily recommended amount of iodine is 150mcg, but some people may have to supplement with extra iodine. However, do not start taking iodine unless you have had your levels checked and are taking the recommended dose as advised by a medical practitioner. Too much Iodine can cause hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism.
