Multiple Sclerosis is an autoimmune disorder where the immune system attacks the protective covering of nerves and affects the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerve. Some symptoms include vision loss, double vision, fatigue, numbness or tingling in extremities, muscle weakness, coordination and balance issues, paralysis, difficultly concentrating, and memory loss.
There are many root causes of MS and one of them is the Epstein Barr Virus (EBV). EBV is a herpes virus that causes Mononucleosis which is known as the kissing disease, because it is contracted through saliva. Once someone has contracted EBV, it stays dormant and goes undetected by the immune system until it is reactivated. Studies have shown a link between EBV and MS. In fact, one study found EBV in the brain lesions of those with MS.
If you have MS and have not been checked for EBV, ask your practitioner to do a blood test to determine acute or chronic exposure and possible reactivation. To bring awareness, please share this with anyone that you know who has MS.
